Sphincter Repair
It is a procedure applied in cases where the rectal muscles, which we call the sphincter, are damaged. As a result of this damage, incontinence (incontinence of gas or bowel movements) develops depending on the internal or external sphincter damage.
The most common cause of incontinence after Anal Surgery has been reported for LIS-Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy (cutting the breech muscle), which is applied in the treatment of chronic anal fissures, up to 45%. This is followed by anal fistula and hemorrhoid surgeries.
The most important reason here is careless surgery. In LIS, the sphincter is damaged and incontinence occurs as a result of cutting the entire sphincter, damaging the sphincter without distinguishing the fistula type in fistula operations or improper seton applications, and deep removal of the hemorrhoidal pouch during the operation in hemorrhoid operations.
Despite this, some patients are in the risk group, even if care is taken in the surgery. Elderly and obese patients who have given birth multiple times are in the risk group. Therefore, special attention should be paid to this group of patients if anal surgery is to be performed.
